Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about diagnostic software, licenses, firmware, interfaces and support.
General Questions
3What diagnostic interface do I need?
The required diagnostic interface depends on the software version and vehicle model year.
Older vehicles typically use MPI-2 or MPI-3 adapters, while newer models and BUDS3 require the modern VCI800 interface.
Which BRP models and production years are supported by MPI diagnostic adapters?
The range of supported BRP vehicles depends on the specific MPI adapter model being used.
Over the years, three main versions of the adapter have been produced: MPI-1, MPI-2, and MPI-3.
MPI-1 is an older diagnostic interface that communicates with a computer through a traditional RS-232 (COM port) connection.
It operates using legacy communication protocols such as KW2000-250k, DESS, and 947-DI.
This adapter supports most early 4-TEC models that use the 250k communication speed, as well as a wide range of two-stroke BRP vehicles.
However, due to the absence of higher-speed communication protocols, MPI-1 is not compatible with modern E-TEC systems and certain Can-Am ATV models.
MPI-2 and MPI-3 are modern USB-based diagnostic adapters that use the CAN communication protocol, supporting data transfer speeds from 25 kbps up to 1000 kbps.
For BRP diagnostics, they work with both KW2000-250k and KW2000-500k communication speeds, allowing reliable servicing of newer vehicle generations.
These adapters can diagnose both 4-TEC and E-TEC platforms.
When used together with the DESS Post module, they also enable advanced service procedures such as key programming and full system configuration, making them suitable for servicing nearly the entire BRP vehicle lineup, including some earlier models.
It is important to note that MPI-1 is no longer supported by current diagnostic software versions.
The latest releases of the BUDS program are designed to work only with MPI-2 and MPI-3 adapters, ensuring full compatibility with modern BRP vehicle electronics and communication standards.
Do you provide worldwide support?

It provides improved communication stability, expanded functionality and support for modern electronic control modules.
What is BUDS3?
BUDS3 is the newest BRP diagnostic platform developed for current and future vehicle models.
It works with the VCI800 interface and supports the latest vehicle electronics architecture introduced from model year 2017 onward.
What are the minimum system requirements to install the BUDS program?
To successfully install and run B.U.D.S. (Bombardier Utility and Diagnostic Software), your computer should meet the following minimum technical requirements.
The software is designed to operate on basic hardware configurations, but using a more modern system will provide better stability and performance during diagnostic procedures.
Minimum requirements include:
• Processor: 486 CPU or higher (Pentium or newer recommended for smoother operation)
• Operating system: Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT 4.0, ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP or newer versions
• Memory: At least 4 MB RAM (16 MB or more recommended)
• Hard disk space: Minimum 10 MB of free storage
• Display: VGA or higher resolution (SVGA recommended)
• Input device: Mouse or any compatible pointing device
• Connection: At least one available USB port for the diagnostic interface
• Optical drive: CD-ROM drive (optional) for installation from physical media
Important note:
The BUDS software is not compatible with Windows 3.x operating systems.
For professional workshop use, it is strongly recommended to run BUDS on a stable Windows environment with sufficient memory and modern hardware to ensure reliable communication with BRP vehicles and diagnostic interfaces.
Licenses
3What is the Megatech license for BUDS?
Megatech license is the highest-level diagnostic license for the B.U.D.S. software, providing enhanced diagnostic functions and access to advanced service capabilities across all BRP vehicle categories.
It combines the functionality of standard dealer licenses with extended engineering-level features, allowing deeper diagnostics, configuration, and troubleshooting workflows. According to license descriptions, Megatech mode includes dealer-level access for multiple BRP platforms such as Sea-Doo, Ski-Doo, Can-Am ATV, SSV, Roadster and others.
This type of license is typically used by professional workshops, performance specialists and advanced technicians who require maximum control and full diagnostic coverage.
What is the difference between Dealer Technician and Mechatronic Expert licenses in BUDS2?
Dealer Technician is a standard service-level license designed for everyday maintenance and diagnostics of BRP vehicles.
It allows technicians to read and clear fault codes, monitor live data, perform routine service procedures, update certain vehicle settings, and carry out basic configuration tasks required during regular workshop operations.
Mechatronic Expert is an advanced diagnostic license that provides deeper system access and extended service functions.
In simple terms, Dealer Technician is intended for standard dealership service work, while Mechatronic Expert is designed for advanced diagnostics, deeper system interaction, and professional-level technical operations.
What happens to my BUDS or BUDS2 license if my computer breaks down?
If your computer stops working or you need to replace it, your license can usually be restored, provided that the license validity period has not expired.
For BUDS licenses, you can reactivate the license on a new PC by following the official restoration instructions.
For BUDS2 licenses, you should follow the activation instructions that were sent to you by email at the time of purchase.
It is very important to use the latest available version of the BUDS2 software during the activation process. The download link for the most recent version is available on the official Mega FTP repository.
To ensure maximum reliability, we recommend using your BUDS2 license on only one primary computer.
This approach preserves additional activation attempts in case your PC is lost, damaged, or replaced in the future.
Important notice:
A BUDS2 license can be activated on a maximum of three different computers.
If all activation attempts are used, the license cannot be restored after a hardware failure, and a new license purchase will be required.
DIAG-SYSTEMS always provides guidance and support to help customers safely activate or restore their diagnostic software licenses.
