Overview

This manual explains the “Clear as New” procedure used in BUDS2 diagnostic software when programming a replacement ECM or resetting an ECU configured as a service part.
The guide describes preparation steps, required software versions, vehicle power requirements and verification procedures after successful initialization.

The instructions are intended for professional technicians working with BRP diagnostic systems.

The Clear ECM as New procedure is used when installing a replacement engine control module or restoring a service ECM to factory initialization state.
This process ensures correct synchronization between the ECM, vehicle cluster and diagnostic configuration parameters.

Before starting the procedure, the technician must verify that the installed version of BUDS2 meets minimum software requirements.
Updated diagnostic databases and workspace versions are essential for correct programming workflow and module communication.

During programming of a blank ECM, vehicle information is retrieved from the instrument cluster.
If both ECM and cluster are replaced, the cluster must be programmed first to allow proper transfer of vehicle identification data.

The procedure requires stable vehicle power supply and fully charged battery conditions.
Using temporary battery chargers instead of a stable power source may cause programming errors or module malfunction.

After initiating the programming sequence through the BUDS2 Summary and Health diagnostic tabs, the technician confirms vehicle model data and manually enters the engine identification number at the final stage of initialization.

Once programming is completed, the vehicle must be scanned again to validate VIN synchronization, engine serial number recognition and service hour reset values.
The guide also explains how to clear generated fault codes and verify proper engine operation across the full RPM range.

An additional section describes resetting an ECM configured as a service part.
This procedure allows clearing vehicle diagnostic identifiers, resetting maintenance counters, erasing key data and preparing the module for new vehicle configuration.

Correct execution of this process is critical for workshops performing ECU replacement, firmware recovery and diagnostic restoration procedures on BRP powersport vehicles.
