How to Match ECM and Cluster in BUDS2 (Security Coding Procedure)
Step-by-step guide explaining how to match ECM and cluster in BUDS2 using security coding and clear related fault codes.
Manual content
Overview
This guide explains how to correctly match ECM and instrument cluster using BUDS2 diagnostic software after module replacement.
The procedure ensures proper security coding synchronization between modules and eliminates mismatch errors that prevent correct vehicle operation.
ECM and Cluster Matching in BUDS2
In earlier BUDS versions, ECM and cluster modules had to be manually matched to ensure proper operation and prevent unauthorized module replacement.
This system was originally designed as a security feature to prevent theft by blocking ECM installation in another vehicle without proper authorization.
The same functionality still exists in BUDS2 but is implemented through security coding procedures.
When this procedure is required
You must perform ECM and cluster matching when:
• ECM is replaced
• Instrument cluster is replaced
• Security coding mismatch error appears
• Vehicle does not start after module swap
Matching procedure in BUDS2
Step 1 — Open BUDS2
Connect to the vehicle and navigate to:
• Summary page
• Health tab
Step 2 — Execute security coding
Locate the function:
👉 Handle Security Coding
Double click it
or select and press the green arrow (right side of screen)
This will synchronize ECM and cluster data
Step 3 — Clear fault codes
After matching, a fault will appear in the system.
Important:
❗ You cannot clear an ACTIVE fault
To clear it:
- Start the engine or remove the key
- Re-scan the vehicle
- Fault status changes from Active → Occurred
- Now clear the fault
Common issue — Security Coding Mismatch
If mismatch is present:
• ECM and cluster are not synchronized
• Vehicle may not start
• System shows error in Health tab
Practical notes
• Always re-scan after coding
• Verify no active faults remain
• Ensure correct module installation
Practical benefits
• Restores vehicle start capability
• Eliminates security coding errors
• Synchronizes ECM and cluster
• Required after module replacementWhere can I purchase a license?
